What Clients Say

I was facing eviction in the middle of winter with my two kids. I didn't know my rights. MLSA's attorneys stepped in, fought for us, and we stayed in our home. I don't know what we would have done without them.

Maria T., Housing Rights Client

I had nowhere to turn. MLSA helped me get an order of protection and figure out how to keep my children safe. Their attorneys were patient and thorough and never made me feel like a burden.

As a veteran, I was getting the runaround on my benefits for years. MLSA knew exactly what to do and helped me get what I had earned. They do it for free. That still amazes me.

Questions We Hear Every Day

Do I qualify for free help?

Most low-income Montanans qualify. If your income is below about 200% of the federal poverty level and your problem is civil — not criminal — apply. Not sure? Apply anyway and we'll help you find resources even if we can't take your case.

Will MLSA actually respond?

We call back within 3–5 business days. If you have a legal deadline — a court date, an eviction notice expiration, a benefits denial window — note it when you apply and we prioritize accordingly. The online application is available 24/7.

Are nonprofit lawyers really effective?

In 2023 alone, MLSA delivered $4,428,518 in direct financial benefit to clients. Our attorneys have 50+ years of Montana courtroom experience and hold national awards including the 2025 ABA Louis M. Brown Select Award. We fight for Montanans.

Innovation in Access to Justice

Tribal Advocacy Incubator Program (TAIP)

TAIP trains, mentors, and supports community members to become tribal lay advocates on Montana's reservations. By building legal capacity from within, TAIP creates sustainable access to justice that is culturally grounded and community-led.

In partnership with the Blewett III School of Law and the Indian Law Section, TAIP has become a national model for tribal access to justice. The American Bar Association's 2025 Select Award recognizes TAIP as one of the most innovative access to justice programs in the country.
