Ways to Volunteer
Phone Advice Line
Limited Scope Representation
Provide brief legal advice by phone to Montanans who need guidance but may not need full representation. MLSA's phone advice line lets you make a real difference in one hour from your own office. Malpractice coverage and CLE credit provided.
Family Law & Housing Clinics
In-Person Legal Clinics
Join MLSA's statewide network of legal clinics providing family law and housing advice to low-income Montanans. Clinics run 2–4 hours and are held at locations throughout the state. Case management support and malpractice coverage provided.
Emeritus Project & Pro Bono Academy
Full Representation
Take one case at a time through MLSA's Pro Bono Program. MLSA provides case management support, malpractice insurance, and mentorship. The Emeritus Project supports retired attorneys returning to practice for pro bono purposes.
Tribal Advocacy & Emerging Attorneys
TAIP / AmeriCorps / Internship
MLSA's Tribal Advocacy Incubator Program trains community members to become tribal lay advocates. The AmeriCorps Justice for Montanans program places emerging legal professionals in MLSA offices for a full year. Law student internships and Equal Justice Works fellowships also available.
Justice for Montanans AmeriCorps Program
MLSA's AmeriCorps program places members in tribal communities and rural Montana to provide civil legal assistance. Members receive a living stipend, education award, and hands-on experience in access to justice work. Positions are available annually.

MLSA offers Continuing Legal Education courses for Montana attorneys who volunteer. CLE credit is available for most volunteer activities, including phone advice, clinics, and training sessions. MLSA is an approved CLE provider for the Montana State Bar.
